International Day Against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

December 1987 saw the General Assembly announce the 26th June as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, determined to achieve an international society free of drug abuse through strength and cooperation from individuals, communities, and various organisations across the globe. The theme for 2017 “Listen First” aims to listen to children and youth as the “first step to help them grow healthy and safe", the initiative is to increase support in the prevention of drugs, investing in the well-being of children and youth, their families, and their communities.

The World Drug Report 2016 states an estimated 1 in 20 adults aged between 15 and 64 years used at least one drug in 2014, “Roughly the equivalent of the combined populations of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom”, resulting in an estimated 207,400 drug deaths. On average, younger people are seeking treatment especially for cannabis and amphetamines, reflecting drug trends. Randox Toxicology persistently stays ahead of the ever changing drugs of abuse market with a vast test menu of over 500 drugs and analytes, constantly being updated with significant reinvestment in our Research and Development.

Further, recommendations to address the demand and supply reduction were made in 2009 when the UN General Assembly held a Special Session (UNGASS) to create the policy document, "Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem". The documentation defined action to be taken by Member States and the goals to be achieved by 2019, putting a new emphasis on national sentencing policies and practices for drug-related offences. The results have seen governments coming together to create a new more effective and humane path forward, with the UNGASS follow-up process continuing to provide countries with institutional plans to learn from each other and share their experiences.

Randox Toxicology’s pioneering technology has created many advancements in the field of toxicology. Our patented Biochip Array Technology can simultaneously screen from a multi-analyte testing platform, achieving a complete immunoassay profile from the initial screening phase. Designed to work across a diverse range of matrices including urine, blood, and oral fluid, our technology covers multiple drug classes such as classical, prescription and synthetic drugs of abuse. Our products are suitable for laboratory, custodial and workplace environments, allowing staff to operate the analyser in different environments.
