BBC News released data today from 40 police forces in England and Wales, revealing that almost 25,000 motorists tested positive for drug driving over a three year period. The statistics documented that between 2015 and 2017, 8,336 drivers had tested positive for cannabis and 3,064 for cocaine.

Discussing the UK crisis, campaign director at Brake, Joshua Harris stated, “At present, only devices which can screen for cannabis and cocaine usage are in use, limiting the police’s ability to detect drug-driving at the roadside.”

According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, in 2017 drug fatalities in Europe have once again increased for a third consecutive year. In the UK alone, newly emerged figures from the Public Health England have documented that the UK’s current approach to drug treatment has failed to reduce drug related deaths. With UK drug abuse now at an all-time high, 2017 saw a 23% increase in treatment presentations for crack cocaine use.
