Cocaine and MDMA Ranked Highest Usage in Belgium

The latest wastewater findings from the European-wide SCORE group revealed that cocaine use is highest in western and southern European cities, particularly Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. The results come after the average drug purity in Belgium was found at 78% in 2016, partly explaining the high quantities of cocaine recorded in the city’s sewerage pipes. More recently, it has been highlighted that during a six-month period in 2018, 21.7 tons of cocaine had been seized in Belgium, resulting in the federal government proposing a plan of action to tackle the continuing crisis.

Additionally, over a seven-year period of monitoring the levels of MDMA in wastewater, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands also consistently ranked the highest. Long term trends indicate that MDMA use was higher in 2017 than in 2011, with sharp increases observed in Antwerp and Amsterdam.
