Opioid Drug-Related Deaths Increase as US Epidemic Continues

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there were 63,632 deaths in 2016 caused by drug overdoses, with 42,249 of them attributed to opioids. Among this drug category, fentanyl proved to be the most common opioid drug that people in the US suffered from through overdose. Perhaps a more shocking fact is that 131 Americans die from opioid overdoses a day in the US. This shows that it is a concern that is hugely prevalent in the US. Over the course of 19 years, drug overdose deaths increased by 421%, and two thirds of those deaths are attributed to opioids.

US News brought out in a report how drug overdoses, combined with suicide, are becoming more common reasons for death than diabetes in the US. Dr. Mark Olfson of Columbia University in New York City explained that more screening of drugs of abuse needs to be carried out to treat patients for depression.
