Despite having some of the strictest laws for narcotics in Europe, France’s president Emmanuel Macron is taking the necessary steps to reform the country’s drug laws following concerns over a continuous rise in drug abuse. In 2015 convictions for drug use in France were 37,160 compared to that of 3,481 in 2000. The number of drug arrests in France increased further in 2016 to nearly 140,000 and 67.5% of the country’s arrests.
In 2016, 306 people in Cobb County, home to the city of Marietta, died from an overdose. A further 359 people died in the same year in Fulton county notably, in Alpharetta and Johns Creek. Together these locations have created the heroin triangle which represents the highest overdose death rates recorded in county health records.
Among the younger generation in Nigeria there has been an alarming rise in drug addiction and drug trafficking. Gulf News reported that in the first quarter of 2018, more than 100kg of illegal drugs had been seized in customs at Dubai Airports. The seizures were made 134 times, preventing the drugs from entering the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
